European Union and Georgia
Georgia, with its values, has always been an integral part of European civilization, its geographical, cultural and historical space.
Immediately after gaining independence, Georgia made its strategic choice and defined the European and Euro-Atlantic integration as the only path of the country’s development. The history of cooperation between the European Union and Georgia goes back more than a quarter- century, and today we are closer to the European Union than ever before.
Today, integration into the common European space is an unchanged vector of Georgia’s foreign policy.
Georgia is gradually and consistently moving closer to the European Union by adhering to common European values and principles and implementing the best European standards and norms in all fields.Today, Georgia-EU relations are characterized by special dynamism, which is of great political and practical importance for our country. In recent years, as a consequence of the efforts of the Georgian government, sustainable reforms and intensive and successful cooperation with the European Union, the results of historical importance have been achieved.
Signing of the “Association Agreement”, encompassing the component of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, must be emphasized in the first place, which upgraded our relations with the European Union to a qualitatively new stage and laid the foundation for the process of our political association and economic integration with the European Union. Georgia joined the Energy Community, which will strengthen the country’s energy security; Georgian nationals were granted a visa-free travel to the Schengen area, which is the most tangible result for the population;
We have a high-level strategic dialogue on security issues with the European Union, where we discuss common challenges in the field of security and defense.. Last year, we launched a new high-level format of cooperation with the European Commission led by the President of the European Commission and the Prime Minister of Georgia, which includes members of the European Commission and the Government of Georgia as well. The first meeting was held on 21 November 2018. This is a unique format of cooperation ,established exclusively for Georgia,that clearly demonstrates the commitment of Georgia and the European Union to further deepen cooperation in a number of priority areas.
The successful implementation of the Association Agreement is of great importance in terms of and strengthening the country’s European identity, and ensuring the irreversibility of the European integration process andthe political support of Georgia from the European partners,, including the issues related to the protection of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity The Association Agreement is practically an action plan for the modernization of Georgia, which concerns all spheres of political, social and economic life of the country. The priorities of European integration are fully aligned with the Georgian government’s reform plans and the country’s vision on socio-economic development.
Successful reforms aim to strengthen the protection of human rights, deepen democracy, achieve greater transparency, effective governance, stronger security and regional cooperation, protection of consumer and property rights, better education, healthcare, etc.
To strengthen the irreversibility of the European and Euro-Atlantic integration process, , with the efforts of the current government of Georgia, amendments were made to the country’s constitution,, according to which all measures need to be taken to ensure the full integration of Georgia into the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
