Mission in Iraq

From 2003 to 2008, the Georgian Defence Forces joined the Multi-National Force – Iraq. In the U.S.-led operation, the coalition was tasked with supporting and ensuring the formation of an effective defence force and the development of defence capabilities for the Iraqi government. In 2008, Georgia deployed 2,300 troops in Iraq, becoming the third largest per-capita contributor to the coalition forces in Iraq.

The main tasks of the Georgian units included: full-spectrum operations, protection of key facilities, patrolling/searching and checkpoint operations, engineering security operations, military hospital support and escorting.

In all, 8,495 Georgian soldiers served in the international mission in Iraq, within 19 rotations at different levels. During the 2008 Russia-Georgia war, Georgian units returned to their homeland, thus ending the mission of the Georgian Defence Forces in Iraq.

3 Georgian soldiers were killed and 19 – wounded in Iraq.
