NATO’s role in Darfur (Africa, Republic of Sudan)

In 2005, the African Union increased its peacekeeping contingent in Darfur (Sudan). The move was aimed at ending violence in the region. On 26 April 2005, the Chairman of the African Union (AU) appealed to the Secretary General of NATO for practical assistance to the AU peacekeeping logistics unit. After consultations with the European Union, the African Union and the United Nations, the North Atlantic Council granted the African Union’s request.
In June 2005, NATO officially announced its readiness to assist the peacekeeping mission in Darfur with strategic relocation, training of mission personnel and relocation of civilian civilians. Between July 2005 and February 2006, NATO airlifted 24,000 African Union peacekeepers. In addition, NATO provided African Union officers in multinational military headquarters with training and effective information management. NATO works closely with the European Union, which supports the African Union peacekeeping operation.
